Hirsch Adds Another Award

Senior Casey Hirsch picked up another academic honor this winter as she was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) 2011 Women's Scholar All-West Region team, the organization announced.

Hirsch was named to the first team. She owns a 3.62 grade point average in psychology and will graduate this spring.

This past year, the Yorba Linda native helped the Coyotes to a 9-6-3 overall record. She scored a team-high seven goals and 16 points and was named second-team All-CCAA.The forward was a one-time CCAA Player of the Week during CSUSB's record-setting six-game winning streak.

Earning honorable mention status was senior defender Kelsey Gudgeon. The Redlands native owns a 3.64 GPA in her business administration major.

Women's Soccer Earns NSCAA Team Academic Award

Congratulations to the CSUSB Women's Soccer program for its second consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Award. The women's soccer team posted a combined GPA of 3.26 and was tied with CSU Stanislaus (3.26 gpa) as the top GPA in the entire CCAA conference for women's soccer teams.

SAN BERNARDINO – Senior Casey Hirsch and sophomore Chelsey Jones, members of the Coyotes' women's soccer program, have been named to the Capital One® Academic All-District VIII team, as selected by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Hirsch holds a 3.62 grade point average in psychology and recently completed her career by earning second-team All-CCAA honors. The Yorba Linda native led the Coyotes in scoring with seven goals and 16 points this season as CSUSB completed the regular season 9-6-3 overall. The forward was a one-time CCAA Player of the Week during CSUSB's record-setting six-game winning streak. She also is a three-time All-CCAA Academic selection.

Jones owns a 3.90 GPA in Liberal Arts and played an integral role in CSUSB's stretch drive. After stepping into the starter's role, she enjoyed a 7-1-2 record with 4 ½ shutouts and helped the Coyotes to their six-game winning streak and eight-game unbeaten streak. She produced a scoreless streak of 470 minutes and 20 seconds. The Hesperia native also was a one-time CCAA Player of the Week.

Both Coyotes now move on to the national All-American ballot. The Capital One® Academic All-American women's soccer squads will be announced Nov. 30.

Nominations and voting for the All-America programs are conducted by CoSIDA members. Nominated student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of their team's games, hold a minimum of a 3.30 GPA and be a starter or a key reserve. No student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.

CSUSB Ends Season

CSUSB Women's Soccer ended the season 9-6-3 overall and ranked #7 in the West Region by the NSCAA. CSUSB was hit pretty hard by the injury bug early in the season but ended the CCAA conference by posting a 7-1-2 record in the final 10 games. The 7 CCAA wins put CSUSB in 3rd place in the CCAA South Division behind nationally ranked UCSD and CSULA.

Along the way, CSUSB broke several long standing program records.

1. Programs longest winning streak (6 games)
2. Programs longest streak without a lost (8 games)
3. Most consecutive shutouts (4 games)
4. Beat CSULA, CSUDH and at least a tie with UCSD in the same season
5. Went undefeated against the CCAA North bracket (5-0-1)

Chelsey Jones Named CCAA Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK — Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Chelsey Jones has been named the Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 10-16, it was announced on Monday.

Jones, a sophomore from Hesperia, was solid in goal while helping the Coyotes to a pair of victories over southern California rivals Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A.

In 180 minutes in front of the net, Jones posted a pair of shutouts while totaling seven saves. The weekend performance marked her third straight blanking of an opponent and brought her season shutout total 4.5.

Cal State San Bernardino, which has won a school-record six consecutive matches, returns to the pitch on Friday when it hosts CCAA North Division leader Sonoma State beginning at 12:30 p.m.

CSUSB Women's Soccer defeated #20 ranked CSULA today at Coyote Premier Soccer Field. Goals were scored by Emily Mardon and Jani Carmona with the assists being credited to Sierra Van Meter and Chelsey Jones.

In the Friday game, CSUSB beat CSU Dominguez Hills 2-0.

Thw win was the 6th consecutive victory for the Coyotes, a mark that now sits as the best single season win streak in CSUSB women's soccer history.

The CSUSB women's soccer team defeated Chico State 1-0 today in Chico, California. The win improved the Coyotes to 6-5-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the CCAA. The win was the 4th in a row for CSUSB and was the full game shutout for goalie Chelsey Jones, who is now 4-0-0 as a starter in the net.

Blogging with Casey Hirsch: Our game against CSU Stanislaus

Our hands are on the panic button (after starting the season 0-5-1 in the CCAA) and everyone knows how important each game is.

This game against Stanislaus was just as important as a playoff game, every minute mattered. Coach Clarke had said going into the half tied or up 1-0 would mean a win for us. He was right!

The second half started, we were tied 0-0 (just as planned). We were the more dominant team starting the half, however; they took the lead in the 50th minute. The time was dwindling down and with 15 minutes left, with another opportunity in front of me, I took a hard shot on the keeper, with luck on my side the ball went passed the keeper to tie the game 1-1.

I have never felt such accomplishment as seeing the ball in the back of the net. After that, the momentum was to much for any team to handle. We kept going at them and with 4 minutes left, Brittney Wilding cut inside and took a beautiful shot upper V near post. The atmosphere was that of a movie. Our team wanted it more than them, plain and simple we took the game into our own hands and determined the outcome. The 2-1 victory on the road vs CSU Stanislaus is a game that will always be remembered by each one of the yotes on the Women's Soccer team.

They are a very good team and we feel that this was a great win for us, especially on the road. Go Yotes!

Blogging with Junior Goalie Chelsey Jones

This year our soccer team traveled to San Clemente for our team retreat. We stayed in a gorgeous beach house thanks to the Hirsch family. Upon arrival on Wednesday morning, all 30 girls made sandwiches for lunch and headed down to the beach. We enjoyed playing volleyball, tanning and getting to know each other a little more. Even though the water was a little chilly, mist of the pups enjoyed the waves. It was a relaxing environment and a perfect way to catalyize friendships.
After we hiked back up to the house, the Hirsch family began to prepare dinner. In the mean time, the girls on the team found ways to entertain themselves. Some went up onto the deck and played Scategories, others were playing Sharades, and the pups were all preparing for the highlight of the night: the Freshman Dance. We split the pups into two teams and had them choreograph a dance to RESPECT by Aretha Franklin. When the time came, the two teams definitely gave the crowd a great show. There wasn't one person there without a smile on their face.
Later on that night we all headed back down to the beach for a bonfire. The smores were amazing and dj Tiffany had everyone entertained. Next, the seniors had the rest of the team do a trust walk activity. Every girl had to blindfold herself with a long soccer sock and lined up single file. We were instructed to hold onto the shoulders of the person in front of us. As the seniors led the team around the dark beach, they had us overcome random obstacles. Our job as blindfolded teammates was to enhance our communication so that the girl behind us could overcome the obstacle. It was a fun and unique way to establish trust and communication within our team. After the trust walk we all gathered around the bonfire and each of the 8 seniors delivered a short speech about our upcoming season, important advice, and motivating words of wisdom.
The next morning all of us woke up to the smell of pancakes, bacon, orange juice, and fresh fruit. After breakfast we went on a 30 minute team jog along the beach. When we returned the captains had another activity planned for us. Each girl wrote their names on a large piece of butcher paper and we sat In a huge circle. Every 30 seconds, we passed the papers to the left. Each girl on the team wrote a few positive words about the person who's paper she had. Eventually, every girl on the team had a paper with positive and encouraging words from every member of her team. Next we went around and talked about our favorite characteristics and also revealed some things that others may not have known. The captains did a great job at helping the team get to know each other on a more personal level. Chemistry on and off the field is an incredibly important tool to become champions.

The team spent the last couple of hours at the beach before returning back to San Bernardino. Overall, this CSUSB Women's soccer retreat was better than any other retreat I have ever experienced. The vibe that I get from all of the girls is unlike any other feeling. We were able to create stronger bonds within the team which is crucial to the way we play on the field. The girls ultimately became more of a family and we are so excited to show everyone what were made of! Go Yotes!!!

Jenna was a 3 year starter at California Baptist University after transferring from Cal State Fullerton. During her three years at CBU, she was named on the NAIA All American List three times while guiding her team to the NAIA Elite 8 in 2009. Coach Whitty also serves as Coach Travis Clarke's assistant coach on the Platinum FC Girls u9 club team based out of the Inland Empire.

(Notes From Jenna About The First Two Days of Training):
From the start of camp the young women all seemed to be fired up about this coming season. We started our training camp with the Cooper Fitness Test which over all went very well. We had 9 student athletes complete the required 6 3/4 laps in 12 minutes.

Casey Hirsch, our senior captain, took the test to a whole different level by going above and beyond what is considered passing. Casey has really shown the rest of the team what hard work and determination looks like. She is constantly pushing everyone and encouraging along the way. Once the Fitness Test was out of the way the girls were able to really settle down and start playing. The two days of practice we have focused on the defensive side of the game. We saw everyone getting stuck in on tackles and really battling for that spot this season. This group of players are going to make our jobs as coaches very difficult.

We were able to scrimmage in the afternoon and after 50 minutes of play neither team had scored. Each player has a sheer determination to never get beat. Having 10 incoming freshman, it is important that they adapt quickly so that our team can be as successful as possible and they are doing just that. Our upper class men are also doing a good job of showing them what it takes to be a college soccer player. I am excited to see what the rest of the week holds. The starting level for us is very high, so I am excited to see what they will accomplish this season.

WALNUT CREEK - A total of 451 student-athletes were named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Academic for the 2010-11 academic year, commissioner Robert J. Hiegert announced on Tuesday.

To be eligible student-athletes must meet the following criteria:

1) Varsity student-athlete (must have earned a varsity letter per institutional criteria - e.g., no red-shirt student-athletes are eligible for this award)

2) Must be a student-athlete in one of the 12 CCAA-sponsored sports (men's cross country, women's cross country, men's soccer, women's soccer, women's volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's golf, women's tennis, men's outdoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, baseball, and softball)

3) Grade point average for the 2010-11 academic year of 3.40 or higher in a minimum of 24 semester/36 quarter units completed at the certifying institution. Non-graded units may be included in the 24/36 unit total.

CSUSB Women's Soccer ended the 2010 - 2011 Academic year with an overall team GPA of 3.27 (35 student athletes) up from last years award winning mark of 3.01.

Griffin a Gael

MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team has named Leonard Griffin as assistant coach, joining head coach Adam Cooper and assistant Chris Brown. Griffin comes to SMC after three seasons as an assistant coach at Cal State San Bernardino.
"I am very excited to add Leonard to our staff," said Cooper. "His experiences as a professional soccer player and NCAA Champion will be invaluable to our program. Leonard has played for, and learned from, some of the most respected coaches in the United States, and we look forward to him bringing that knowledge to our program."

He is currently a member of the Los Angeles Blues, a USL professional team.

Griffin has played professionally with the Los Angeles Blues, a USL professional team. Prior to being on the LA Blues, Griffin spent time with Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew, Chicago Fire, Portland Timbers and L.A. Galaxy. While a member of the Galaxy, he played 20 minutes in an exhibition game against FC Barcelona in the Rose Bowl.

Griffin played four seasons at UCLA where he earned all-America honors in 2003 and helped the Bruins win a national title in 2002. He also played with the Orange County Blue Star and Austin Aztecs in the USL Premier Development League.

He was drafted by Chicago in 2004. He was waived in 2007 and signed with USL First Division Portland Timbers. The Columbus Crew acquired him, then waived him and he rejoined the Timbers in 2008. In 2009, he was signed by and played for the Galaxy, who played in the MLS Championship game that year.

Griffin works in all aspects of the Saint Mary's soccer program including recruiting, camp development, fundraising, team academics and day-to-day field training.

Cal State Bakersfield tied the game with 79th minute to gain a tie against the visiting Coyotes this past weekend. CSUSB scored midway through the first half on a corner kick.

Both teams played very well in what was mostly an even game. The result puts the Coyote women with a Spring record of 2-0-2 in games against all NCAA Division I programs.

Coyotes tie UCLA at Home

CSUSB tied UCLA 2-2 at Coyote Premier Field on Sunday in front of a large crowd in the first of 7 spring matches for Cal State San Bernardino.

CSUSB trailed 1-0 and 2-1 but was able to tie the game twice.

CSUSB is away next weekend as the they take on Southern Utah and UNLV in Las Vegas, Nevada.

CSUSB Women's Soccer adds depth in the 2011 recruiting class. With 8 seniors expected to start in the opening game of the 2011 season, this new group of Coyotes is set to carry the load moving forward into 2012 and beyond. The class gives the coyote women additional athleticism, size and technical skill.

"This class gives us some depth for 2011 and a large group of student athletes that will be ready to lead this program going forward into 2012 after our large group of upperclassmen graduate after this next season. We feel that all of our 2011 class will compete on a daily basis for playing time with the veteran players on the team. I am excited to get this group together in camp and start working toward our goal of the conference tournament and beyond! We plan on being one of the most fit and hard working teams in the West Region and this group of new student athletes will help promote that type of mentality moving forward. • Entering senior year, 36 goals, 22 assists. As of Jan 26 she has 10 goals in 2011: Total HS Goals 46. Total HS Assists 22.

Stefania Bowlick

Height: 5’3”

Hometown: Rancho Cucamonga
Club Team: Arsenal
Position: Forward

Stefania comes to CSUSB from one of the top club teams in the country, Arsenal FC G92 coached by Cle Kooiman (Noah Kooiman’s older brother). Bowlick attends Los Osos high school in Rancho Cucamonga, but chose not to play high school soccer.

Her club team played three seasons in the Coast Soccer League Premier bracket, winning the league each year. Arsenal FC ended their run in the Premier bracket with one league loss in three years. In addition to the Coast Soccer League, her club team won the Albion College Showcase, Arsenal Invitational, Cerritos Memorial, and the So Cal Blues Cup. On a regional and national level they were the Super “Y” League North American champions, US Club Soccer National Champions, USYSA Far West Region Finalists and Cal South National Cup Finalists.

She has grown up playing youth soccer at the highest possible levels and that experience should provide her a solid base moving into the college game. Emily played for Chino Hills High School and for the So Cal Blues Soccer Club.

“Emily comes from a club program that is known to develop top level college soccer players. She has good size and athleticism as well as a very long throw in that will help us on some of the smaller fields in the CCAA. Natalie Vasquez

Height: 5’6”
High School: Chino High School
Hometown: Chino, CA
Club: Fullerton Rangers
Position: Defender

2010 First Team All League at Chino High School is leading her high school team to a current 13-1 overall record and 11-0 in the Mt. Baldy League. As of early February, Natalie had 13 goals and 10 assists playing mostly as a forward.

She was a late add to our 2011 class but her overall calm sense on the ball and within the zones on the field will slow the game down for us a ton. Coyote Women Get NSCAA Team Academic Award

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has awarded Cal State San Bernardino Women's Soccer team with the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2009 season.

In order to get this award the program must maintain a team average GPA of 3.0 or above for all three quarters of the school year. In 2009/2010, the Coyote Women posted a team GPA of 3.01 including 21 of the 35 student athletes with GPA's above a 3.0. In the Fall of 2009, the team had 10 Leaders of the Pack award recipiants (GPA's above a 3.5) and had 6 student athletes named to the ALL CCAA Academic Team.

Jani Carmona Named 2nd Team All-West Region

HILO, Hawaii -- Sophomore F Jani Carmona was named to the 2010 Daktronics NCAA Division II Women's Soccer All-West Region second-team, the organization announced Tuesday.

The Daktronics teams are selected by the NCAA Division II West Region sports information directors.

Carmona, who was a second-team All-CCAA selection this fall, was impressive in her first season for coach Travis Clarke. The Hawaii Hilo transfer led the Coyotes in several offensive categories including: goals (15), assists (6), points (36), shots (67), SOG (35) and game-winning goals (3).

Her 15 goals are the third most in a single season in CSUSB history.

The Coyotes completed their season with their third consecutive winning season at 9-8-1 overall -- a first in the history of the sport.

Coyotes Ranked #10 in West Region Final Poll

The Coyote Women's Soccer team ended the regular season with a 9-8-1 overall record that was good enough to be ranked #10 in the Far West Region by the NSCAA.

The CSUSB women's soccer team was ranked as high as #2 in the West Region and #13 in Nation in 2010.
